Can Budgies Eat Fish?

Budgies do not need meat protein, so they can eat fish. In captivity, budgies can get all the nutrients they need from seeds and fruits. Some bird keepers feed their budgies cooked chicken or fish every two weeks, but it is not necessary for their health. Avoid raw fish and shellfish like oysters and mussels. Some hobbyists and breeders feed their budgies small amounts of cooked fish, but it should be done sparingly.

Budgerigars, also known as parakeets, eat seeds, fruits, berries, and vegetation in Australia’s grasslands. Budgies in captivity need a balanced diet that mimics their natural diet. They can eat tropical fruits like pomegranate, papaya, jackfruit, mangoes, passion fruit, dragon fruit, and guavas. Apples, oranges, bananas, grapes, coconuts, and pineapples are also acceptable. Apples and pears should be avoided because they have seeds or pits. Chocolate and avocado should also be avoided because they are high in fat, sodium, and sugar.

Budgies need a variety of foods to get all the nutrients they need. They may become malnourished if they eat only seeds. Budgies can eat broccoli, spinach, carrot, kale, and sweet potato as well as fruits. Vegetables should be washed, chopped, and given to birds fresh. Nuts, which are high in fat, are also loved by budgies. A medium-sized parrot like an African gray parrot needs one unsalted almond or walnut per day. Smaller birds like cockatiels and budgies should only be fed a few almond slivers or walnut pieces per day.

I know budgies need a balanced diet because I own one. I did not realize my budgies needed a variety of foods when I first brought them home. After consulting with my vet, I added fruits, vegetables, and nuts to their diet. They were more active, their feathers were shiny, and their eyes were bright. They were also more active and playful, indicating happiness. Budgies need a variety of foods to get the nutrients they need.
